Our popular Motivate Your Mind course is back for the new year!

Have you set yourself new health and wellbeing goals for 2023?

Do you want to learn how to be more self-motivated to reach those goals?

We are really excited to announce that we will be kicking off the new year with our popular four-week course, Motivate Your Mind: Functional Imagery Training (Group FIT). Following the success and high demand from last year’s courses, we now have two upcoming dates for Group FIT in January and March 2023.

Our Motivate Your Mind course is designed to help you build confidence and feel better about yourself, whilst working towards healthier living for better mental health and wellbeing. The Group FIT programme trains you how to use functional imagery training (FIT), a form of visualisation, to help you identify what you want to achieve, how to change it, and strengthen your motivation to make that change happen.

The feedback collected from the participants of last year’s courses found that the tools and resources, the small group sizes, and the clearly set goal to work towards were the most beneficial aspects of Group FIT. When asked about what they had enjoyed most about attending, one participant remarked: “the opportunity to discuss rewards and challenges in a group setting and hearing about other people’s own experiences”.

I have really enjoyed facilitating Group FIT. The programme structure and small group style provide a safe space for people to be reflective and self-aware, but without it feeling like a therapy group.

The Group FIT tools were really valued by participants as they worked towards their healthy living goals.

Weight and fitness stigma can have a big effect on how we feel about ourselves. It can reduce our confidence and contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression. We all know what we ‘should’ be doing, but often there is something stopping us and a negative pattern starts happening. Group FIT can help you achieve a healthy lifestyle, which is beneficial for our mental health.

Motivate Your Mind: Functional Imagery Training (Group FIT) consists of four weekly 90-minute training sessions, with a final catch-up meeting three weeks after the last session. If we are able to offer you a place, you will receive a personal handbook and motivational toolkit to keep you motivated, whatever your goals. All sessions are conducted in small, supportive groups, with tea and coffee provided.

Group FIT is an evidence-based course developed by the University of Plymouth and Queensland University of Technology.

Functional Imagery Training (FIT) arose from our research on cravings. Having discovered that cravings involve imagining how certain foods look, taste, and make us feel, we wondered if we could create ‘cravings’ for healthy activities. In FIT, we help people to create images about eating healthily or exercising that are similar to those craving images.

Our first trial of FIT found that it increased weight loss fivefold compared to a verbal coaching style of support. After 12 months, with only four hours of FIT in total, participants had lost more than 6 kg in weight compared with under 1 kg in the control condition. That study involved one-to-one sessions of FIT, but here with Devon Mind we are offering FIT in small group sessions for the added benefits of peer support and encouragement.
