1:1 Emotional Support

We’ll work with you to ensure you receive the right support for you

What is 1:1 emotional support?

Our Recovery Practitioners support people in Devon experiencing a variety of mental health difficulties. They aim to help you develop skills and strategies that will enable you to work towards improving your wellbeing and recovery.

Adopting a trauma-sensitive approach, Recovery Practitioners can support you in developing a goal that you wish to work towards. The support provided aims to empower people to start to feel in a more positive place to manage things day-to-day, no matter how small this may be.

Some people may be interested in accessing activities run by other organisations, but feel daunted by the idea of attending these — Recovery Practitioners can also use some of the sessions to help explore what steps people can take to enable them to participate fully in activities that they feel would have a positive impact on their mental health.

“I have been in and out of various mental health services my entire adult life, left home at 18, and been on and off medication, tried group therapy and other services, which never really helped me.

My Recovery Practitioner listened to me from day one and gave me time and space to say what I needed to say. She then explained everything back to me and gave me the tools to manage what was happening to me.

My Recovery Practitioner is a really special person and I can’t thank her enough”.

— Christopher, January 2024

“I have found the support from my Recovery Practitioner to be invaluable in my recovery. The continuity she has been able to give me has greatly helped, particularly building up a good rapport.” — Katherine, May 2024

“The support I received was amazing. My Recovery Practitioner was immensely understanding, patient, thoughtful, and encouraging. She used her empathy skills to ensure I didn’t feel so isolated and had excellent communication skills. She was always professional, using her training and experience to support me through a very, very difficult time of my life. She did this in a way that felt like I was being empowered and that we were a team. This was very important to me at a time when I felt the opposite.

I will never forget her gentle input, thoughts, compassion, and support. It made an enormous difference to me at a time when I felt I had nowhere else to turn to. By the end of our journey together I had a much better outlook and felt prepared to take the next step in my life without her. I felt sad when I said goodbye but will always remember and thank her quietly for helping me become the person I am today. Thank you.” — Claire, May 2024

“Having a recovery practitioner visit you in your home is such a valuable tool to be able to access. Often we can struggle to leave the house and deal with our thoughts but knowing that someone will be coming to spend time with you, listen, and give perspective to your thoughts is so important.

My Recovery Practitioner was excellent at signposting to various resources and outlets that can enable someone to take the first steps out of isolation.” Lee, June 2024

“This was probably the best service for me in terms of actually helping. I was listened to and helped both at the same time. A plan was put in place for after our work, so I felt empowered and not just left. We also worked on things to put in place before this happened.” — Olivia, June 2024

How our support process works:

The first step to accessing our 1:1 emotional support is to fill out the registration form below. This will give our team of Recovery Practitioners the important information they need to prepare for an initial discussion with you to explore your current support needs.

  1. Once we have received your registration form, one of our Recovery Practitioners will take a look at your details and schedule an initial triage phone call with you to explore the options available to you. We aim to make this initial call as soon as possible, at most within 4 weeks of receiving your registration form.

  2. If our Recovery Practitioner cannot reach you, they will endeavour to leave a voice message to advise that they have called, and for you to contact the office. We will also send an email to you advising you to call us. Please note: If we do not hear back from you within 10 working days of the initial call being made, we will look to close your registration, as it will be assumed that you no longer wish to pursue our support at this time.

  3. During this initial phone call, our Recovery Practitioners will discuss your support needs with you — this might include chatting about what you’re currently experiencing and how you’re feeling, what support you might’ve had in the past, and any extra information that could be important to them.

  4. The Recovery Practitioner you speak to will then advise you what they think the best course of action is to help you with your mental health needs. This may be one of Devon Mind’s own services, or they might connect you with another organisation or one of our trusted partners, depending on your current needs.

  5. If it is agreed that our 1:1 emotional support is the most appropriate option, you will be allocated to a Recovery Practitioner. We will endeavour to allocate a Recovery Practitioner to you within 3—4 weeks from the initial triage call. Please note: During some periods this may take slightly longer, however, we will try to inform you if this is the case.

  6. Once a Recovery Practitioner has been allocated, they will arrange an initial meeting to look at your support needs in more detail and put together a tailored plan of support with you.
