Championing nature for positive mental health with the South West Coast Path

To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week 2021 (MHAW), we are delighted to announce that we’ve joined forces with the South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA) to show how connecting with the natural world can support positive mental health.

The collaboration supports this year’s campaign theme of Nature, which was chosen to recognise the critical role the natural environment has played in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the nation throughout lockdown. Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen a record demand for our services, whilst the SWCPA has witnessed increased interest and usage of the National Trail. Research carried out by the Mental Health Foundation, who have hosted the awareness week for over 20 years, suggests that going for a walk outside and visiting green spaces were the top two methods of coping during lockdown.

To mark the occasion, we will be sharing a range of photos, stories, and local walks to inspire people across Devon to connect with nature. We will also be encouraging you to share your experiences about how the natural world has supported your mental health and will be offering tips and advice on where to find support.

The link between nature and positive mental health is well documented, and together we will strive to make this benefit a reality for more people in our communities with mental health challenges.”

David Morris, SWCPA Trustee and member of the charity’s Health & Wellbeing group, added: “Being able to connect with nature by walking trails like the South West Coast Path is absolutely critical to supporting good mental health. Walking outside in nature has the power to both prevent and support recovery from poor mental health, and our collaboration with Devon Mind is the first step in helping more people benefit from this amazing natural resource.”

In a survey of more than 1,000 people during the first lockdown of 2020, the SWCPA found that over 80% of people felt more positive after walking the Coast Path. 75% said they felt less stressed, while 57% were able to sleep better and 62% felt more inspired to be more active. These findings coincide with Natural England’s People and Nature Survey, in which it was found that 89% of adults agreed green and natural spaces are good for mental health and wellbeing.
