Liam Lindon — Ultra White Collar Boxing
Exeter, March 2024 in aid of Devon Mind
“I saw the event come up and thought, why not? I love sport and have always fancied a go at boxing, and this looked like a good way into it. I chose to raise money for Devon Mind, which is part of the national mental health charity Mind. Having suffered with my own mental health, I know how vital it is to have organisations like Mind raising awareness and offering support to those who need it. They rely on people like me to help fund their work.
Being a Devon lad, I wanted to give back to the area I am from and live in, so Devon Mind was the perfect choice. My goal was to enjoy the experience and get fitter, and both boxes were well and truly ticked. Aside from getting married and having children, these have been the most amazing 8 weeks of my life. Fightworx in Torquay is a fantastic gym, full of passionate, knowledgeable, and encouraging coaches and members who want you to be the best you can be.
Fight day was such a buzz and a fun day for the competitors and their spectators—an experience I will never forget. Overall, I became significantly fitter (and I have always kept fit), my mental health improved during the 8 weeks, and I met some amazing people along the way. This experience proved that even at 40, you can still learn a new, physically demanding sport.
I will now continue to attend Fightworx and see where that takes me. My advice to anyone thinking of taking part is to sign up — there is nothing stopping you. Don’t miss training, take any extra training offered, and it will pay dividends. Listen to all the advice on offer and train hard. Enjoy the experience as it’s over so quickly!
The Ultra experience was life-changing. I just want to say thank you to everyone at Fightworx for all their support and advice throughout the journey, and to everyone else who helped me along the way.”
