Book Club

Monthly social sessions

Do you enjoy escaping into a book? Do you want to meet like-minded people who share your passion for reading? Join our monthly book club and social get-together at Ernest English House, Plymouth.

We are excited to be hosting a monthly evening book club on a 3-month trial basis. We invite you to join our group to connect with others through reading, sharing book recommendations, and enjoying the opportunity to relax and listen to others share their love of books. Feel free to being along your favourite books to enjoy with a cup of tea and biscuits.

Reading has been closely linked to reducing stress levels, promoting relaxation, improving sleep, and enhancing connectivity in the brain. A book can allow us to escape into new worlds, present us with new perspectives, and can be a healthy distraction from everyday stresses and screen time.

Books are a uniquely portable magic
— Stephen King

Overview:

The aim of our book club is to create a space for individuals to share what they are reading, recommend their favourite stories, discuss dynamic characters and attractive settings, and explore the books that challenge ideas, make them laugh and cry, and take them on journeys to different eras, places, and spaces.

Every month we will have a choice of a fiction or non-fiction book that we will discuss as a group. Although we encourage and invite you to read the book of the month, it is not essential and you can still attend to share your love of books with the group. Each month’s book will be chosen together in the club, so we’d love to hear your recommendations! We will aim to select books that feature topics around mental health or an influential and inspiring story, but we are open to any suggestions you may have.

September 2024

The first session is an open discussion, meet and greet, and opportunity to share your favourite book over a cuppa.

Book of the month — October 2024

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us. Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts. Book of the month — November & December 2024

The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex

Inspired by true events, The Lamplighters is a mix between a mystery thriller and historical fiction, the story of three men who vanish from a remote lighthouse. Twenty years later, the mystery of their disappearance still haunts the heartbroken women left behind. Rich with the salty air of the Cornish coast, this is a sweeping drama that will bring you to tears, even as you can’t look away. Read more.
