Trauma, Shame & Self-Care

Self-care and compassion in response to trauma

Please note: This course is designed for individuals who have experienced trauma, not for people seeking knowledge for professional development or studies.

Course overview:

Trauma, Shame & Self-Care is a course designed for anyone who has had difficult negative experiences as a child or an adult. The programme aims to empower attendees to make positive changes by increasing awareness and understanding around trauma and shame, how it affects our thoughts and behaviours, and providing information on what we mean by self-care and the different methods of self-compassion.

This course is intended to raise the understanding of trauma and how experiencing trauma can affect our behaviour. We will explore the nature of shame and its link with trauma, as well as looking at the differences between shame and guilt. The programme will then move on to start to unpick what we mean by the concept of self-care, helping you to notice things so that you can accept some and try to change others.

The subjects we will cover include the following:

  1. What do we mean by trauma? How can it affect our attitudes and behaviours?

  2. How can traumatic experiences lead to people experiencing feelings of shame?

  3. What is shame, how does it affect us, and what happens when we’re triggered?

  4. Exploring self-care, compassion, self-regulation, and ways to be more accepting

A mindblowing course that gives you an induction to what trauma and shame is/does — put together in a simplistic way.

Course format:

Trauma, Shame & Self-Care is delivered as a full-day course consisting of a single 6-hour session split into two parts (with a lunch break in between). The course is hosted by our Recovery Practitioner staff and Support Volunteers, who will guide attendees through presentations focused on the core topics above. Each session will include elements of group discussion and will allow time for questions. This course is free to attend. Registration is required to join.

Please note:

This is a course for people who have experienced trauma and shame and we will be discussing complex trauma and how shame might affect us in present lives.  It isn’t a therapy group to process trauma so we would ask you please not to share personal stories as we cannot guarantee confidentiality and we want everyone to feel comfortable and safe. However, there will be plenty of opportunities for the group to comment and get involved in discussions.
